The film of ‘The Sound of Music’ is over forty years old but it has universal appeal and is still loved by people from all over the world.

Now the musical is being revived for the stage in London’s West End by musical master Andrew Lloyd Webber.

Andrew Lloyd Webber is casting – looking for an actress – to play Maria, the leading role which was played by Julie Andrews in the film. But finding the perfect actress is proving difficult. Today’s headline says ‘How do you solve a problem like Maria?’

Lloyd Webber said that Julie Andrews made the role her own when she played it in the film version in 1965. He says she gave a fantastic performance that is sort of iconic.

There were rumours that the American actress Scarlett Johansen was going to play the role of Maria. But Lloyd Webber says he’s looking for a fresh, new face, an actress who can make the role her own.

To help find the perfect actress, the BBC have launched a TV talent show where people will be competing for the role of Maria.

There is three months left before the curtain is lifted at the West End musical. So whoever gets the role, will have to work hard!

The cult musical is likely to be a hit when it goes on stage in London.

People in the city still enjoy the film. There’s even a cinema where you can dress up as characters from the film and singalong with the musical. You can buy Eidelweiss flowers and brown paper packages tied up with string from the song ‘My Favourite Things’.
